Green bonds

Seeking both positive environmental outcomes and financial returns

What are green bonds?

“Green bonds” are a type of bond instrument whose proceeds are earmarked to support environmentally sustainable projects including those related to the transition to a low-carbon economy. They help finance a myriad of initiatives, including renewable energy, sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, pollution prevention, and biodiversity preservation.

Achieve impact transparently and credibly

Green bonds can provide a transparent tool to finance environmentally friendly projects at no additional cost. As proceeds are earmarked, investors benefit from increased transparency as issuers undertake to report on the projects financed and the positive and measurable impacts these projects delivered through impact KPIs.

Support real world decarbonization and net zero

Green bonds are used to directly finance low-carbon solutions in energy, transport, and buildings. By funding tangible projects needed by issuers to reach their own decarbonization objectives, green bond investors can support real-world change and the transition to a net-zero economy.

Mature, attractive market with balanced performance drivers

The green bond universe has changed significantly since the first issue in 2007. The green bond market is a large, well-diversified, and dynamic market that is a credible alternative to the conventional bond market.
